All of Tribal Beginning A-C basics

Tribal Style Belly Dance
Beginning A



Basic Posture
Facing 11’oclock for right hip moves, and 1’oclock for left hip moves. Posture is pulled up—project from the chest, but tuck the pelvis so that you don’t arch your back. Elbows are always up and facing back, so that arms are parallel to the flow.
Don’t drop those elbows!
Middle finger of each hand is slightly bend down, so that other fingers can splay above it. Keep some tension in your fingers – don’t let hands or fingers become floppy.

Snake arms Traveling snake arms
Seaweed Traveling seaweed

Medium/Fast
Ghawazee with ¼ and ½ turns (square)
Ghawazee hi-lo levels (w/turns)

Basic Posture

Note: Moves in Italics and Asterisks can be used for traveling and changing positions in clock formation.
Note: Cues are in Twentieth Cent Condensed type. M Cue is a cue added by Masarrah to clarify the next move.

Slow Moves (Most of these moves do not have cues, since they are performed slow enough to catch.)
Cloud pushing Cloud pushing with floreos
Snake arms * Traveling snake arms
Seaweed * Traveling seaweed
Body Floreos Body Floreos with lean
}M Cue: Lower dom hand slightly with floreo to signal which side to start with.
Body Floreos with undulation
Rib circles with 4 arm variations
* Bolero Walk
} Cue: Begin move to left by lowering left arm. M cue: sweep left foot b4 starting.

Taxim Taxim with snake arms
Reverse Taxim (Maya) Reverse Taxim with snake arms
Reverse Taxim with 4 arm variations Forward Figure 8 with snake arms

Medium/Fast (Cues are needed here since moves are fast.)
* Basic Ghawazee
Cue: Move arms to position
Ghawazee with ¼ and ½ turns (square)
Cue: Floreo dominant hand for ¼ or both for 1/2
* Ghawazee hi-lo levels (with turns)
Cue: Lower arms, then raise, or flick wrists up/down

Basic Egyptian with ¼, ½, and full turns (square)
Cue: W/arms up, face hands out. Bring rt arm back for ¼. Turn body to left for ½, and do 1/2 with verbal cue for full turn.
* No Way Man (Fwd/Back)
Cue: Push out and circle w/ right hand above head

* Basic Choo Choo (with side traveling)
Cue: Sweep dom hand down and point out while hip bumping. For turns, cue as you would with Arabic turn, following elbow.
Single Choo Choo (with turns)
Cue: Bring other arm down and slightly in front

* Arabic
Cue: Cross hands down front and push down while stepping; raise arms
* Arabic with turns and traveling
Cue: Bring down arm in direction wish to turn, elbow pointing to dir
* Arabic with snake arms (with turns)
Arabic hi-lo levels (with turns)
Cue: While up, lower arms slightly and quickly, then raise
Arabic hip scoop with turns (diagonal)
Cue: Lower hands to shoulder level to frame chest
Arabic hip twist with turns (diagonal)
Cue: Lower both arms to shoulder level to point toward audience
Reach and Sit with turns (diagonal)
Cue: Lower both arms to shoulder level to point away from audience

Cleopatra
Cue: Slowly move arm and body into Cleo position to right
* Tic Toc
Shimmies (No cues needed here.)
Slow ¾ shimmy Knee shimmy
Piston shimmy Washing machine
Formations (Cues are formation and verbal cues.)
Rotating clock in groups U shaped group chorus with duets and trios
